About the Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB)
The Burgundy Wine Board (BIVB) is a professional organization which brings together all winegrowers and wine-merchants of Burgundy. Burgundy today is a 26,000 hectare puzzle, representing only 0,5% of the world vine production, but which still adds up to 204 million bottles. No other French region so neatly sums up one word – “terroir” – all the potential for great quality wines. For what makes Burgundy wines stand out is the intimate relationship between the soil, the influence of the microclimate, the grape variety and the work of the man. More information on Burgundy Wines is available on the website: www.burgundy-wines.fr/.
Its roles
• To represent and defend the interests of Burgundy wines and professional winemakers and merchants
• To define Burgundy wine policy in technical, economic and marketing terms
• To conduct activities related to this policy
Its organization
The BIVB is organized around three departments:
The Technical and Quality department
This is intended to improve the quality of Burgundy wines, while promoting winemaking, which respects the environment and giving industry professionals the keys to attain this objective.
The Market and Development department
The role of this department is to identify Burgundy markets as carefully as possible in order to refine the organization’s communication strategy, while helping companies with their sales approach.
The Marketing and Communications department
This department promotes Burgundy wines in France and abroad. It supports companies in the industry in marketing Burgundy wines, while also helping consumers and specifiers gain a better understanding and appreciation of Burgundy wines.
Its resources
Industry professionals pay a subscription fee to the organization, calculated on the basis of wine output, must and grapes, with a rate which varies according to appellation. Its overall budget is around 10 million euros.
